We are Iniciatíva Inakosť
We are a civil society organization dedicated to building a more just society where all human beings are free and equal in dignity and rights. Our mission is to improve the lives of LGBTI+ people in Slovakia so that they can express their true selves and feel safe, respected, and accepted for who they are. We defend human rights, we enact systemic change through strategic litigation, we educate the public, organize cultural events, and amplify the stories of LGBTI+ people, their families and children to change how they are perceived in the society.
Slovakia ranks among the EU countries with the lowest levels of legal protection and social acceptance of LGBTI+ people and their families. Instead of finally progressing towards equality, LGBTI+ people are faced with constant attempts to further restrict their rights. Even after the horrifying attack in front of Tepláreň, one of the few LGBTI+ safe spaces in Bratislava, we are witnessing a concerning wave of hatred against the community. We will not let this hatred win.
- We defend and advocate for LGBTI+ people's rights
We actively defend the rights of LGBTI+ persons and we advocate for more just and inclusive laws and policies in Slovakia. We are committed to preventing any further restrictions of LGBTI+ people's rights in our country.
- We provide psychological, legal, and social counseling
Our counseling center inPoradňa provides in-person and online counseling for the LGBTI+ community in Bratislava and in Slovakia. We help LGBTI+ people with self-acceptance, with integration into their families, schools, and the wider society, and with resolving the impacts of discrimination or negligence of the authorities.
- We increase the social acceptance of LGBTI+ people
We conduct awareness campaigns and shed light on the lives of LGBTI+ people, as we believe in the value of personal experience and storytelling. We aim to change the public perception and overcome the deep-rooted stigma against queer people in Slovakia.
- We help build a strong and safe community
We run a community center where LGBTI+ people can be their authentic selves and find safety, acceptance, and respect for who they are. We organize various social and cultural events such as the Rainbow PRIDE Bratislava and the Slovak Queer Film Festival.
